The Campbell River Tyees peewee girls are on a roll after posting two more convincing victories last weekend.

Last Saturday, at Strathcona Gardens, the Tyees took on the over-matched Oceanside Icebreakers. The one Oceanside goal came early in the first period, but that was it as Tyees’ netminder Shaylene Gjesdal shut the door.

Awesome stick-handling and quick moves landed Julia Wing four goals. Briana Vandenberg, Taylor Rose and Paige Chapdelaine each scored a pair, while Tara Dickson, Cassidy Bellavance and Callie Anne Massee brought the total to 13-1.

Kennedy Volk and Megan Grant got a pair of assists each and Lisa Chapdelaine and Marliss Hofferd had one each.

On Sunday, the girls travelled to Parksville to play the Icebreakers again and returned home with 6-0 shutout victory.

The Tyees are proving to be a force to be reckoned with and are continually getting better and stronger as the season progresses thanks to dedicated coaching by Dennis Bellavance and Bill Boschman.

The team returns to Parksville in the new year to play in a four-team tournament.

Tyees (in team jackets ) Kennedy Volk, Talia Boschman, Shaylene Gjesdal and Tara Dickson celebrate with their family and friends after winning their Saturday game, bringing donated food to the River Relief Truck, sorting donated bottles at the bottle depot and serving Christmas dinner to seniors at the Adult Care Society.

Domino’s Pizza Female Peewee Tyees showed their community holiday spirit on Saturday.

The girls, along with the Nanaimo Clippers girls team, brought many bags of food for the local food bank to the game. Afterwards the girls delivered the mighty donation to the River Relief Truck in the Merecroft Village mall. The girls thanked everyone on the “The River” radio station, then continued on to sort a huge donation of bottles from a local gentleman with many more considerate donations to the girls right at the bottle depot.

That night some of the team, moms and brothers helped serve a Christmas meal to 60 seniors at the Adult Care Society.

Peewee girls’ hockey is underway.

After four games the stats are one loss, two ties, and one win.

Their loss was also their first game, against the Victoria Peewee Rep A girls. They travelled down to Victoria in the early morning hours to be there for game start at 9:15 a.m. The Victoria team was a force to be reckoned with. The Tyees came out strong but the home team controlled most of the game.

The girls now realize how important conditioning is going to be to take their game to the next level. With a few more practices under their belt and a few line changes, they are now starting to come together and in short order will prove that they are a force to contend with.

The next two games in Campbell River were against house teams which were both ties. Teamwork is huge in the sport of hockey and the girls are finding their game together, passing, defending and scoring.

Their fourth game was against the Sooke Peewee Rep A girls and the difference from game one to game four is proof that time and practice makes for good hockey. The lines were quick with just enough time to catch their breath, get a drink and then on the ice again giving their all for quick, explosive shifts.

The final score was 4-2 for the Tyees with Julia Wing scoring un-assisted in the first period and Taylor Rose scoring with the assist from Tara Dickson in the second. In the third period Briana Vandenberg scores the final two goals with assists from Lisa Loyd and Tara Dickson.

All the players are doing an awesome job – from the ‘D’ that help goalie Shaylene Gjesdal to the forwards for keeping the game in the other end.
